Forest maths tutor

My name is Roger Brewis, and for fourteen years I have been tutoring students in maths and other subjects with high levels of success from my home in Coleford in the Forest of Dean. The photograph to the right is of my wife and myself. Topic by topic, I focus on understanding and simple techniques to build confidence rapidly. I approach teaching with a light touch and considerable experience of how maths works and how to explain it. Please have a look through the rest of this one page website, and then contact me if you feel I could be of assistance.

Me and My Wife

Focus on understanding

I focus my tuition on understanding because it rapidly improves students' confidence. Understanding also makes the rules and techniques much easier to remember, and is the only effective way to achieve high marks. I can explain how fractions work, what algebra is for, and why employers ask for maths. I provide effective explanations for all levels of mathematics and levels of ability.

Building confidence

Parents should see a clear improvement in confidence after one or two lessons, and this will continue to build. I teach every topic from the most basic level, so that I can correct misunderstandings that may have been there for several years. Correcting these hidden misunderstandings is one of the keys to regaining confidence and tackling more advanced topics.

Subjects offered

Mathematics, from basic levels up to beyond A level. Also science and English, and occasionally other subjects. I have a wide range of knowledge and experience, and what I know I can teach

Details of tuition

I provide tuition at my house in Coleford. This provides a safe, structured environment, where students discover that they can be successful. Tuition is one-to-one and each lesson lasts a full hour. Lessons are normally weekly, at a time that is mutually convenient. After school is the most popular time. I am flexible in accommodating parents' shift work, etc. As of September 2012, the cost is £20 per hour. Feedback to parents is provided outside of that time at no extra charge.

Starting tuition

You and your child will get to meet my wife and myself before starting tuition, and I provide detailed feedback on how we have got on after the first lesson, which is still a full hour.

More about me

As of 2012, I am semi-retired, and a chief examiner. I have worked successfully in engineering, in science and in maths education, and have related graduate and post-graduate qualifications. I have been Head of Maths in Birmingham and at RFDC. I have a passion for maths, science and English, and enjoying teaching others, sharing my knowledge and enthusiasm. I have a range of interests, and in summer like to spend time in the garden. My wife, Nu, is an excellent photographer, specialising in flowers and portraits. Our daughter is currently making good progress on her Ph.D.

Security

Students are never discussed with others, apart from their parents or guardians.

Will recommend if asked.

Thank you for your wonderful help, without it I don't know how I could have faced the exams.

I thought I was a lost cause. I am pleased to say that I have finally achieved my C grade, and I never, ever, ever have to study this dreadful subject again.

I unexpectically passed with a C. (unedited)

She is now settled in at sixth form, taking ... wait for it, maths!!

You were brilliant.

Thank you for making me more confident in my maths. It has helped a lot in everything I do.

My sister got a B in Pure 1 and a C in Mechanics 1, and I got a B in Mechanics and a C in Pure 1.

It has been invaluable.
